Senator Speaks out Against Free Speech!

Recently Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) said that Alaska broadcasters should not air ads that were by her opponent and his supporters. Normally I don’t delve into a local issue, but this is evidence of a systemic problem facing America. The ads are said to be falsehoods about the Senator, but even still, silencing opposition is a terrible response.

We have someone in Congress who swore to defend the Constitution, encouraging others to ignore the first protection it provides for the people. Troubling is not the right word, repugnant might be.

We have an out of touch aristocracy elected to Washington. I doubt that the voting people of Alaska actually believe political dissent should be silenced.

Everyone, senator, president, or common citizen, says something stupid once in a while. We do however need to evaluate our elected officials with very close scrutiny. Either it is a one-time flub or someone is out of touch, regardless we need to pay attention and hold people accountable.

Political speech is the most protected, when someone encourages silencing it, they set their foot on the path to tyranny.

We don’t want to go down that path.
