If there be any among us who wish to dissolve this Union or to change its republican form, let them stand undisturbed as monuments of the safety which error of opinion may be tolerated where reason is left free to combat it." ~ Thomas Jefferson (March 4, 1801, presidential inaugural speech)

Jefferson believed that we should allow the most fervent detractors of a free people and our liberties voice their opinion undisturbed to ensure we would use reason ensure those opinions did not take over. The thinking process is what keeps us from allowing tyranny to overwhelm our liberty.
